The ambition of Asgard’s Wrath 2 is something to be congratulated.
We have a 100+ hour game here on the virtual reality Meta Quest headset and it’s great to play.
My problem with it, as is my problem with VR in general, is that you can often feel headachy and sick after extensive VR gameplay.
That’s a long-standing issue across the industry.
And with such a multi-hours big video game from the Meta team here, it can stand out during stints of gaming.
Once VR bods are able to crack that particular quirk in this style of gaming I’m sure we’ll see far more long-form experiences in the genre.
For now, Asgard’s Wrath 2 stands out among the crowd as a ‘proper’ game for gamers.
One, if you can stomach it, that you can immerse yourself in for hours on end.
Gameplay is intuitive and fun
This is a first-person role-play game set in the world of Norse mythology.
Think Thor, Loki, Odin and sprinkle in a whack of cosmic mysticism, universe jumping and magic and you’re basically there.
You play as a Devine being, a Cosmic God, and are tasked by three future-knowing Weavers in tracking down the God of Mischief himself, Loki, who has gone awol.
And apparently it’s your fault as he threatens to wreak havoc across all existence.
Oh dear.
The nuts and bolts of the game involve fighting your way through baddies and coming up against big boss fights.
Enemies are varied and with the swish of your trusty sword, like a Wii remote in hand, you can slash and dash evildoers into oblivion.
As you jump between mythical realms, embodying heroes from ancient lore, the power of the Quest 3 headset in particular means you’re met with beautifully detailed, colourful visuals that are easily comparable to top VR games like Horizon Call of the Mountain.
Boss battles are tough and a blast
And like that game, you move around in small incremental turns, left and right, back and forward, dashing to the sides and hacking away at groups of baddies all intuitively.
It’s impressive, responsive and fun.
There’s weapons to unlock, crafting to do, puzzles to solve and areas to explore for goodies, all carefully and lovingly thought out by the team as Sanzaru Games.
The game will also introduce a new rogue-lite procedurally generated dungeon mode, The Uncharted Rifts, which you can loot and compare your efforts on the leaderboard against other players.
Cosmic events are also due to drop post-launch, where you’ll be able to earn rewards in personalised challenges and join Community Conquests outside the main storyline.
An epic game with tons of content.
