Former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams’ death has been shrouded in mystery. The official details regarding the cause of his demise were released late Thursday. While providing an official cause, officials have also acknowledged the potential influence of other factors. Williams died due to a rare form of sepsis related to dental health problems, as per reports.
Initially reported on September 5, it was suggested that the ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers player had died after an accidental blow to the head at a construction site. However, subsequent revelations indicated that Williams was “fighting for his life.” Tragically, he passed away on September 12 at the age of 36.
The Hillsborough County (Florida) Medical Examiner Department attributed Mike Williams’ death to “Bacterial Sepsis with Cerebral Abscesses and Necrotizing Lobar Pneumonia due to multiple Dental Caries and retained tooth roots.” Essentially, severe dental problems led to infections, resulting in pus around his brain. Initial tests revealed brain swelling and infections.
Selected by Tampa Bay in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Williams made an immediate impact during his career. The wide receiver played four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he was drafted out of Syracuse in 2010. His best season was as a rookie when he led the team with 11 touchdowns and had 964 receiving yards. He also played for the Buffalo Bills and was on the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster before leaving the NFL in 2016.
