Back in the late 1980s, “Blade Runner” and “Dune” actress Sean Young scored the role of Vicki Vale in Tim Burton’s “Batman” film before a horse-riding injury forced her to exit the project. Kim Basinger ultimately took on the role.
Young didn’t want to miss her chance with the Batman franchise, and so when Burton was prepping “Batman Returns,” Young wanted the role of Catwoman.
The result was she appeared in costume at Warner Bros. Pictures studio one day, with executive Mark Canton recounting on the featurette Shadows of the Bat that Young appeared in his office and lept over a sofa saying “I am Catwoman” while he and star Michael Keaton looked on in shock.
Then the talk of Michelle Pfeiffer taking on the role began to spread, leading to Young making an infamous appearance on “The Joan Rivers Show” in early 1991 in full Catwoman garb for her cause – complete with campy monologue.
The appearance had a mixed reception and in a newly published interview with The Spectator Young reflected on the appearance and the fallout from it:
“Honestly, I thought it was funny!. I thought it was really, really funny, but these, these insecure d—heads at these studios, they just didn’t see the humor. They really didn’t. And I did not realize that that they were so humorless. I really didn’t.
I thought it was absolutely f—ing hilarious. I love that video. Of course, I should play Catwoman, and if these guys had had any sense, any time from that point until now, they would have given me the part again because [the controversy], it was so perfect, but they’re not really good businessmen … They’re not very intelligent.”
The stunt ended up costing her somewhat, the actress never quite landing roles as big as her prior ones again though she kept working in films ranging from “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues,” to more recent works like “Bone Tomahawk” and “Escape Room”.
Pfeiffer of course went on to play Catwoman in “Batman Returns,” whilst others would go on to play the role including Anne Hathaway and Zoe Kravitz on the big screen.
