Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio understands how difficult the task will be for his team on Sunday against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday about the AFC East showdown, Fangio called Allen “the new John Elway on steroids.”
Fangio did clarify he doesn’t mean that Allen is taking steroids.
The Bills quarterback has become one of the most dominant forces in the NFL. He’s built like a tank at 6’5″ and 237 pounds with arguably the best arm in the league.
For a comparison, the average linebacker coming into the NFL is about 6’2″ and 240 pounds.
Allen isn’t afraid to use his size and strength to barrel through defenders when he decides to run the football. The two-time Pro Bowler ranks second among all quarterbacks in rushing attempts since 2018 (642), behind only Lamar Jackson (875).
The Bills have leaned into Allen’s physical style of running, which is a big reason why he has 15 rushing touchdowns this season. He remains a dangerous thrower of the football with 3,947 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and a 65.6 completion percentage.

Fangio and the Dolphins have already been exposed to Allen’s unique talent this season. He went off with 320 passing yards, four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in Buffalo’s 48-20 win at Highmark Stadium on Oct. 1.
It was the first loss of the season for the Dolphins. The two teams are playing again on Sunday with the winner clinching the AFC East and No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs.
Miami has already clinched a postseason berth regardless of the Week 18 outcome. The Bills can make the playoffs with a loss, but they will need a loss or tie by either the Pittsburgh Steelers or Jacksonville Jaguars or the Houston Texans-Indianapolis Colts game to end in a tie for that to happen.
