Arsenal vs Liverpool final score, result, highlights from FA Cup Third Round as Luis Diaz clinches victory
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Liverpool overcame Arsenal 2-0 at Emirates Stadium to progress to the FA Cup Fourth Round with goals in the final 10 minutes, despite suffering for large periods of the match.

The Gunners wasted far too many chances during their dominance, and those misses came back to haunt them in the final moments of the second half.

Jakub Kiwior’s own goal came as a result of a superb dead-ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold before Luis Diaz then sealed the Reds’ place in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with a clinical finish in injury time.

The footballing gods were desperate to steal Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta’s winter breaks as both sides struck the woodwork through Martin Odegaard, Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota. That was until Alexander-Arnold’s peach of a delivery into the danger area landed between the Gunners’ final line of defence and Aaron Ramsdale, who flapped his hands at the cross. Kiwior could only head the ball into the back of his own goal and Liverpool all but had their name in the hat for the next round.

An excellent counter-attack then saw Jota pick out Diaz just right of the penalty spot before the Colombian got the ball out of his feet and found the roof of Ramsdale’s net.

Klopp’s side struggled massively to keep Arsenal at bay in the first half but, as they have so many times this season, they kept themselves in the game and were rewarded for their efforts late on. Ibrahima Konate put in a sensational performance at the back, even without his usual centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk, who missed the game through illness.

The German manager made pivotal changes at halftime and swapped Darwin Nunez to the left and Diaz to the right of the front three, which appeared to turn the game on its head. Liverpool came out of the tunnel for the second half and immediately put the pressure on. While Arsenal weathered the initial storm, they couldn’t hold on and Liverpool’s attacking options proved too much.

The late win keeps Liverpool fighting on four fronts this season as they lead the Premier League, have progressed to the semifinals of the Carabao Cup and are into the next rounds of the FA Cup and Europa League.

For Arsenal, it’s a third successive defeat for the first time since April 2022 and from those three games, Arteta’s side have managed 61 shots but just one goal. And if Gabriel Jesus’ injury wasn’t enough to convince the Arsenal board to splash the January transfer-window cash on a striker, Kai Havertz’s first-half performance certainly was.

Several supporters had hoped that the German might have reached a turning point in his early Arsenal career, having shown much-improved performances in the closing months of 2023. However, that positive form quickly dissipated, especially evident when he squandered two great chances to give Arsenal the lead in the first half. It becomes increasingly apparent that if Arteta aims to take his team to glory and win a title, or any significant silverware in the near future, addressing the striker position should be a priority.

Nonetheless, Arsenal had more than enough chances elsewhere to put this game to bed. Bukayo Saka also struggled to find the target on many occasions and now has just one goal contribution from his past seven games in all competitions. The form will worry Gunners fans but if this result helps Arteta receive the financial backing he needs to push this team on, in the long run, the defeat could become a blessing in disguise.

95th minute: GOAL! 0-2 LIVERPOOL! That will be that. Diaz picks out the roof of the net with a brilliant strike to drill the nail into the coffin. Liverpool are heading to the fourth round of the FA Cup and Arsenal are on the brink of elimination.

90th minute: There are four minutes of added time.

86th minute: Arsenal are looking to go long now as time runs out to save their FA Cup campaign.

80th minute: GOAL! 0-1 LIVERPOOL! We finally have the breakthrough and it’s come from a quality delivery from Alexander-Arnold. He whips the ball into the danger area in between the last line of Arsenal’s defence and Aaron Ramsdale and Jakub Kiwior heads it into the back of his own net.

78th minute: A sensational save from Ramsdale denies Diaz and then Jota hits the bar from the corner with a cracking header!

73rd minute: It’s another instance where Saka cuts onto his left and lets rip from distance but it’s not troubling Alisson.

68th minute: Martinelli currently has Alexander-Arnold on toast down this left. He’s causing the Liverpool right-back a right headache with his trickery. Arsenal are looking lively.

64th minute: The pace of the game is picking up now. Both sides are desperate to avoid a replay as they’ll want to keep their winter break.

62nd minute: Arteta has seen enough, he’s brought on Martinelli to go and win this game for his side.

58th minute: Jota and Gravenberch come on for Gakpo and Mac Allister as Klopp calls in the reinforcements.

54th minute: Nunez has switched to the left in this second half and has started causing Arsenal some problems. He cuts onto his right and fires an effort to the far post but it narrowly misses. This is a much better start by Liverpool.

49th minute: Gomez tries his luck from distance but can’t keep it down, the defender hit is sweet enough to deserve a goal.

46th minute: The second half gets underway as Arsenal kick us off.

HT: Despite Arsenal being the better side in the first half, they failed to take their chances and may live to regret it. Liverpool did well to keep them at bay and created their own chances at times with their best coming on the stroke of half-time through Alexander-Arnold who rocketed an attempt off the bar.

45th minute: Alexander-Arnold strikes the bar! He takes an exceptional first touch and slices an effort with immense power through Ramsdale and off the bar. It was an almighty connection from the right of the box.

42nd minute: Saka’s free-kick is floated to the far post but it’s too deep and sails out for a goalkick.

39th minute: How many chances do Arsenal need to take the lead here? It’s another fantastic ball in from the right and Havertz rises highest to meet it with his head but he can’t head it goalwards, it’s another wasted opportunity.

37th minute: Rice is urged to shoot by the crowd and he does as they command but he doesn’t make great contact with it and it’s again straight at Alisson.

34th minute: Alexander-Arnold tries to catch Ramsdale out from the free-kick down the left but he slightly overhits it.

— Liverpool FC (@LFC) January 7, 2024

30th minute: Odegaard plays Havertz in on goal but he turns into traffic instead of just hitting it!

27th minute: It’s another great move from Arsenal and Saka’s shot is hit into the ground which kills its speed on its way into Alisson’s hands.

22nd minute: Elliott’s corner is met by Nunez but he can’t redirect the header goalwards. He could have done better there.

17th minute: The Reds have appeared to weather the storm as the game’s tempo now eases slightly. However, Arsenal are still enjoying the majority of possession.

11th minute: Liverpool are riding their luck here but again Arsenal cannot get the ball over the line. Odegaard smacks the bar and the follow-up shot is well blocked by Alexander-Arnold.

8th minute: Liverpool are all over the shop defensively. Arsenal could really do with taking advantage of their bright start.

7th minute: It’s another opportunity for Nelson. This time Odegaard cuts the ball back and he can’t quite make good enough contact but it takes a deflection and heads out for a corner.

3rd minute: What a chance for Reiss Nelson! Ramsdale picks him out beautifully from deep in between the full-back and centre-half. Nelson takes it around Alisson but his touch forces him wide and he can only hit the side-netting.

1st minute: Liverpool get the game underway!

5 minutes until kickoff: The players are out on the pitch and we’re ready to go.

15 minutes until kickoff: Kickoff is approaching and the players are getting warm…

— Liverpool FC (@LFC) January 7, 2024

30 minutes until kickoff: Virgil van Dijk’s absence is explained by Jurgen Klopp: “Virgil is ill. We will see how he feels tomorrow. We need to see if he can make the next one. But today was no chance.”

45 minutes until kickoff: Liverpool have enjoyed their recent journeys to the Emirates, winning three of their last four trips there.

1 hour until kickoff: Both teams have gone strong for this one!

Team news is here 👊 #ARSLIV

— Liverpool FC (@LFC) January 7, 2024

1 hour 30 mins until kickoff: As we wait for team news to be announced, we know that Gabriel Jesus is absent from the Arsenal squad today due to a knee injury. It’s been described as “minor” and “not serious”.

This season aside, Gabriel Jesus has missed 10 games on average per campaign in England through injury. This is despite being a rotational option at City.

As a starter at Arsenal he missed 17 games last season and 11 already this season.

The trajectory is a negative one.. pic.twitter.com/4hRfuhAcx0

— EBL (@EBL2017) January 7, 2024

2 hours until kickoff: Diogo Jota could be a player to watch out for tonight. He has made more appearances for Liverpool against Arsenal than he has against any other club and has scored seven goals in his nine games against the Gunners.

— Liverpool FC (@LFC) January 7, 2024
