HYDERABAD: Aviation authorities have imposed fines of Rs 2.1 crore on IndiGo (Rs 1.2 crore) and Mumbai International Airport Ltd (Rs 90 lakh) for the episode on Jan 14-15, where stranded passengers of the airline’s diverted flights were seen eating on the apron of
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Divulging this, a senior aviation ministry official said fines of Rs 30 lakh each were also levied on Air India and SpiceJet for not deploying CAT III-trained pilots on flights to Delhi during foggy conditions last month.
DGCA and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) imposed fines totalling Rs 3 crore on the three airlines and Mumbai airport operator MIAL.
The IndiGo incident involved diversion of Goa-Delhi flight 6E-2195 on Jan 14 to Mumbai due to low visibility in Delhi. After a video of passengers eating on the tarmac at Mumbai went viral, show-cause notices were issued to IndiGo and MIAL on Jan 16.
MIAL was
fined Rs 90 lakh
(Rs 60 lakh by BCAS and Rs 30 lakh by DGCA) after being held responsible for the lapse.
BCAS order states that IndiGo allowed disembarkation and boarding of passengers without following security screening procedures. MIAL failed to report the incident until BCAS sought a report.
DGCA fined MIAL Rs 30 lakh for passengers of two IndiGo flights being “on the apron for a considerable period of time” that night. DGCA found that MIAL failed to maintain discipline in the movement area and did not take any action to prevent passengers from being on the apron.
BCAS fined IndiGo Rs 1.20 crore for serving refreshments on the apron to passengers and doing ramp-to-ramp transfer of passengers without security screening. IndiGo did not report this to BCAS until a report was sought.
DGCA fined SpiceJet and Air India Rs 30 lakh each for failing to comply with instructions regarding rostering of CAT III pilots.
