According to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, the new social media platform Threads has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing 70 million sign-ups in just three days. The app gained immense popularity and became the fastest to reach 10 million users, achieving this feat within hours of its launch.
Threads is close to joining the exclusive 100 million users club, as it meets the increasing demand for an alternative to Twitter.
Zuckerberg expressed his surprise at the platform’s rapid growth, highlighting the tremendous interest and enthusiasm from users. Initially available for Android and iPhone users in 100 countries (excluding the EU), Meta is gradually expanding access to non-mobile devices.
Users can now view Thread posts and profiles on desktop browsers, although desktop login and sign-ups are not yet supported. Meta has plans to introduce new features and is working on implementing a chronological timeline similar to other social media platforms, like Twitter.
The swift growth of Threads presents a challenge to Twitter, as it faces competition from various alternative platforms trying to attract dissatisfied users. Twitter’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, believes that Twitter is unique and cannot be replicated, but the company is actively responding to the threat posed by Threads.
In a lawyer’s letter posted by Semafor, Twitter accused Meta of creating a “copycat” product and threatened to sue, alleging that Meta had hired former Twitter employees to develop Threads. However, Meta has denied these allegations.
