The Kansas Jayhawks and Iowa State Cyclones look to make a splash in the Big 12 in a huge matchup Saturday afternoon. A win for either side could vault them to the top of conference standings so long as other teams fall as well.
Both teams are coming off big wins, too, as Kansas took down Cincinnati on Monday and Iowa State beat Kansas State on Wednesday to move up in the conference standings.
The Jayhawks have been a bit inconsistent, though after falling to West Virginia and UCF over the past two weeks. The Cyclones, meanwhile, are on a two-game winning streak after beating TCU by one point a week ago.
Senior guard Kevin McCullar Jr. leads Kansas with 20.0 points per game this year, which ranks just outside the top-10 in the nation this year. He also averages 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game and scored 83 points in the Jayhawks past five games combined. Hunter Dickinson is also a force in the paint for Kansas with 18.8 points per game and 11.1 rebounds per game.
Iowa State’s whole operation goes through guard Tamin Lipsey. The sophomore leads the Cyclones in points, rebounds, assists and steals per game with 14.1, 5.3, 5.6 and 3.2, respectively.
But while Kansas has stars in the backcourt and frontcourt, Iowa State is better from a holistic perspective. The Cyclones average more points per game (80.5 vs. 79.2) and have the sixth-best defense in the country that allows just 61.1 points per game – compared with the Jayhawks’ 67.7 points allowed. Iowa State also has the 12th best efficiency numbers, per KenPom, with the No. 3-ranked defense. Kansas ranks No. 18 overall.
