LIV Golf has successfully poached yet another golfer from the traditional league. First, the rumor mill pointed towards Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, and Anthony Kim joining the Saudi-backed league. Then, when all of them denied those claims, fans started to wonder who would fill Jon Rahm‘s LIV Golf team. The Saudi-backed league has found Tyrrell Hatton to be the ideal candidate, but it probably would not come without some serious consequences.

The English golfer will soon fill the final spot left on Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII. Despite signing the deal worth almost $60 million, the pro player may also suffer a huge fine for his defection move. And the number could burn a big hole in the golfer’s purse!

Tyrrell Hatton will almost certainly not give up his DP World Tour card. Because of this, he will remain technically eligible to play on the European circuit. Due to the rules and regulations, however, he will receive a ban and a fine each time he plays at any LIV Golf event. As of now, the fines are £75,000 (approximately $95,000) per event and also a one-week suspension per event from any DP World Tour events.

This rule will make it impossible for the English golfer to fulfill the minimum membership requirement of four regular events on the DP World Tour. However, Tyrrell Hatton still has hopes if the negotiations between the PGA Tour and the PIF succeed. If a deal is made, it will allow players to switch leagues without paying a huge fine. And this will sound like good news for the LIV rebels fined by the traditional league.

Players who have been fined for playing in LIV Golf
The case of the DP World Tour fining its players for competing in the Saudi-backed league is not a new one. Back in May 2023, the European League imposed a heavy fine on the 26 players who played in LIV Golf. The pros were suspended from playing at the Scottish Open. Furthermore, fines ranging from £12,500 to £100,000 (approximately $15,000 to $125,000) were imposed.

Following these rules, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, and Richard Bland resigned their membership. But all of these pros paid their £100,000 (approximately $125,000) fine, except Garcia. Now it looks like Tyrrell Hatton will soon also be facing fines of this level.
