The Cougars women’s basketball team picked up a big win on Friday night, while the top athletes in the province were also recognized last week

U of R basketball

The University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team picked up a massive win on the weekend, knocking off the previously undefeated Saskatchewan Huskies 69-62 on Friday night.

Jade Belmore scored a game-high 31 points as the Cougars beat the top ranked team in the country. However, the next night as Regina looked to make it two in a row, the Huskies showed their dominance, winning 90-57 to earn the weekend split.

As for the men, despite entering the weekend with just four losses on the season, the Cougars dropped back-to-back games against the Huskies.

Saskatchewan won 73-70 on Friday and followed that up with a 71-62 win on Saturday to improve to 10-7 on the year.

Both Regina teams carry 13-5 records into the final conference games of the season this weekend against Winnipeg before the playoffs begin on Feb. 21.

U of R track and field

At the Bison Classic this weekend in Winnipeg, the Regina Cougars track and field team put on a successful showing.

In the men’s 1,000-metre race, Jonathan Podbielski collected gold with teammate Brayden Mytopher right behind him in second place. Mytopher also won bronze in the men’s 1,500m.

Shelaine Pritchard won gold in the women’s long jump before collecting silver in the women’s 60m event, while Thomas Haidl finished second in the men’s 60m hurdles.

Daniel Eiswerth placed second in the men’s 600m while Natalia McCullough had back-to-back third place finishes in the 600m and the 1,000m.

The men’s 4x400m relay team also won gold, while the men’s 4x200m team finished third. The women’s 4x200m and 4x400m teams finished second and third respectively.

The Cougars will host the Regina Indoor Games this weekend at the Regina Fieldhouse.

U of R hockey

The Regina Cougars men’s hockey team picked up their second weekend sweep of the season as they beat Trinity Western 8-0 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday.

Ty Barnstable had a career-high four assists on Friday while Ethan Anders picked up his first career U Sports shutout by making 32 saves. Anders then picked up his second consecutive victory on Saturday.

Despite the back-to-back wins, the Cougars (6-18-2) will miss the playoffs this year. They will wrap up the season this weekend in Calgary.

The women’s hockey team didn’t have as much luck this weekend against Trinity Western, as they fell 2-0 on Friday and 5-0 on Saturday as they fell to 6-18-2 on the season.

The women, who will also miss the postseason, host Calgary this weekend to end the 2023-24 season.

U of R volleyball

The Cougars women’s volleyball team dropped back-to-back games against UBC Okanagan on the weekend, losing 3-2 and 3-0, which dropped their record to 1-19 on the season.

The ladies will now get set to travel to Calgary on Friday to take on Mount Royal in the second last weekend of the Canada West schedule.

Saskatchewan Sport Awards

The 2023 Saskatchewan Sport Awards were handed out at a gala on Thursday in Regina, where a few local products were recognized.

Regina diver Lila Stewart won the youth female athlete of the year while Regina tennis player Keegan Rice won the youth male award.

The North Regina Little League All-Stars were named the team of the year, while Saskatoon swim coach Ryan Jones was named the coach of the year.

Humboldt 3×3 basketball star Paige Crozon earned female athlete of the year honours while diver Rylan Wiens, of Pike Lake, was the top male athlete.

Wawota’s Blake Lamontagne, Regina’s Jessica Frotten and Team Saskatchewan Gymnaestrada were also recognized with “Inspire Through Sport” awards.

Maureen Johnson (baton twirling), Don Larson (lacrosse) and Jason Cawkwell (swimming) were honoured with coach dedication awards.

Regina Rebels

After picking up a 2-1 win over Swift Current on Wednesday, the Regina Rebels improved their record to 22-3-0 to remain in first place in the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League.

The Rebels, who had the weekend off, are back in action on Thursday at 8 p.m. when they host Swift Current. Regina will then host Weyburn on Sunday at 1 p.m. with both games at the Cooperators Centre.

Regina Pat Canadians

After entering the week tied for second place in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League, the Regina Pat Canadians continued to separate themselves with three wins over the two teams that were tied with them.

The Pat C’s won a pair of games last week over Swift Current, 6-1 and 6-2, before Regina beat the Warman Wildcats 5-2 on Saturday with Evan Hutcheon picking up his first career SMAAAHL win.

Regina (26-10-1) will now host Yorkton on Tuesday before visiting Moose Jaw on Thursday. The Pat C’s will then be back home on Saturday to host Estevan before a road game Sunday against the Saskatoon Contacts.

Canadian U18 Curling Championships

At the Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships in Ottawa, a Regina Highland Curling Club team — featuring skip Shawna Simpson, third Lauren Speidel, second Makena Bailey and lead Katelyn Speidel — is representing Saskatchewan.

However, it hasn’t been the start the girls had hoped for, as they’ve gotten off to a 0-2 start after losing 6-3 to New Brunswick on Sunday and 6-3 to Northern Ontario on Sunday.

On the boys’ side, Saskatchewan is represented by a Saskatoon and a Martensville team.

Luther Invitational Tournament

The longest running high school tournament in Canada tips off this week as the 70th edition of the Luther Invitational Tournament gets underway at Luther College High School on Thursday.

During this year’s tournament, the champions of LIT in 1984 — the Luther Lions — will also be honoured with many special guests set to be in attendance.

Action gets underway Thursday before the finals are played on Saturday night.
