Meta To Detach Threads From Instagram: Account Deletion And Other Crucial Features Arriving Soon?

Meta has indicated that the Threads app and the platform will gradually detach from Instagram. It’s impossible to separate a Threads account from the dominant photo-centric social media platform.

The Threads social media platform arrived this week and has captured the attention of millions of users. However, thousands of users quickly discovered that the Threads platform lacks several key features and is tightly integrated with Instagram. Meta has indicated it will offer several needed features and detach Threads from Instagram.

When the Threads app arrived, it instantly gained a lot of traction. The majority of people on Threads registered with their Instagram username as it was the simplest and most straightforward way.

The Threads app and the platform is deeply integrated with Instagram. In fact, first-time users just need their Instagram credentials to start using Threads the platform. During the first time logging in, users are asked whether they want to import their Instagram profile details and follow the same users they follow on Instagram.

All this may seem super-convenient, and for the most part, it is. However, several users quickly discovered they could not delete the account on Threads once created.

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, has confirmed that Meta is aware of the issue and is working on a workaround. He has suggested that users can disable or deactivate their Threads account for now.

Threads App To Get Necessary Features Soon?

Apart from the fact that users would have to sacrifice their Instagram account if they want to delete their Threads account, the platform is also a privacy concern. Incidentally, Threads is not compliant with the EU’s stringent GDPR regulations which protect user data and privacy.

The Threads platform is not available in the countries that are part of the European Union. It is not clear when or if Meta will offer Threads in the EU.

Currently, the Threads app allows users to post text-based messages, videos, and short GIFs, and embed Instagram posts in threads. Users can also like, comment, repost, and share posts. However, several key features such as the ability to send DMs, a reverse-chronological following feed, or a planned integration with the decentralized ActivityPub protocol, are missing.

Instagram powers the Threads platform, and that’s why users can get by with just one account. However, this should change soon. Additionally, users should get a more robust search, the ability to see hashtags, curated tabs, and editing tools for attachments before being published, confirmed Adam.
