A MAN was duped into paying $3,000 as part payment for a Toyota Axio after viewing the vehicle for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
The only problem was that the seller had no car to sell.
Police said the 26-year-old victim, from Arima, and his wife had seen the advertisement for the car on the social media site.
Terms for the vehicle were a down payment of $6,000 and a monthly payment of $2,200 for 21 months–a total of $52,200–in a “work to own” agreement.
On Sunday, the victim invited the “seller” to his home where he handed him $3,000, following which he received an official-looking “contract” which outlined the payment requirements, maintenance of the car, as well as a promise that he would receive the car on Monday (February 19).
On Monday, the man called the number he was given as he wanted to know what time he could pick up the car.
He called and messaged the cell number from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. but there was no answer.
The man then made a report to the Arima Police Station.
