Atletico Madrid and Barcelona face off on Sunday knowing their La Liga title hopes will likely be on the line at the Civitas Metropolitano.
Real Madrid’s win over Osasuna on Saturday means champions Barca are 11 points behind the league leaders, and if they fail to take maximum points against Atleti, the defence of their trophy will realistically be over.
Atletico’s title hopes are already very slim, Diego Simeone’s side sitting in fifth place in the table with a 17-point gap to Madrid. Anything other than a win here will surely force Atleti to accept that their hopes of lifting the trophy are over.
These two teams enjoyed positive weeks as they reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, although Atletico went all the way to penalties against Inter Milan and could well feel the effects of that gruelling encounter. Barca were 3-1 winners over Napoli a day earlier and will likely be a little more rested, while their 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture last December will give them extra confidence they can get the job done.
