England face club vs country row with Newcastle and Tottenham internationals to travel to Australia in May

Gareth Southgate is on for a club vs country row with Newcastle and Tottenham set to take all their international stars for their Australia friendly.

It’s been announced that Newcastle will play Premier League rivals Tottenham at Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 22.

These matches come just three weeks before the start of Euro 2024 with Newcastle stars Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier vying for a place in England’s squad, as is Tottenham’s James Maddison.

The Daily Mail reports that both clubs are intent on bringing all international players meaning the three Englishmen are set to jet off Down Under.

Newcastle’s FA Cup exit last weekend opened the door for the Magpies to face Spurs in a post-season friendly, which will see the two clubs jet off for Australia immediately after their final league game of the season on May 19.

The Magpies will then face an A-League All Stars XI on Friday May 24.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe said: “This is a great opportunity to showcase Newcastle United at two iconic venues in an iconic city as the club continues to grow globally.

“We are privileged to have so many incredible supporters around the world, and it’s a chance to be able to play in front of many in Australia who wouldn’t ordinarily get the chance to see the team.

“We look forward to engaging with our supporters in Melbourne and giving them the opportunity to feel closer to the club.”

England’s first outing at the tournament sees them face Serbia on Sunday June 16, three weeks after the Premier League season’s climax.

The Football Association has been approached for comment.

The news will is also likely to affect the South American players in the Newcastle and Tottenham squads with the Copa America kicking off on June 21.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and Tottenham forward Richarlison are hoping to represent Brazil at the tournament, while Spurs centre-back Cristian Romero is expected to be in the Argentina squad.
