Though most of the world got it last year, the action comedy series “Twisted Metal” starring Anthony Mackie is just arriving in the UK on the Paramount+ service.
Mackie recently gave a major interview with the Radio Times about his role in that series and was asked if his long-standing role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson/Falcon prepared him for the role here.
His answer offered a bit of insight into the Marvel Studios process and how rigid the system is there combined with reams of backstory and fan service that has to be honored.
Contrast that with something like the PlayStation game “Twisted Metal” which has little in the way of narrative and is mostly centered around car combat, allowing for more creativity in the adaptation:
“I would say the Marvel thing is completely different, just because it’s such a space of controlled entertainment. Like, there’s only so much you can do. There’s only so much creativity you can bring to the table, because Stan Lee gave us so much content.
Whereas with this [Twisted Metal], it was like, ‘There’s a guy and a girl… go!’ So we were really able to build the world around it.”
Then asked if it means that Mackie and his fellow producers on “Twisted Metal” could introduce characters or unexpectedly kill people, Mackie said:
“Exactly. And that’s the hard thing about the Marvel universe. It’s like, you can’t really go outside of the lines of those comic books.
You know, when we introduced the Falcon, and the growth of the Falcon to Captain America, all of that had to coincide with what Stan had already gave us. So it’s an interesting juggle to be a part of that world. And this was more like, ‘Let’s just have fun and figure it out as we go.’”
The comments come as Marvel Studios is currently in production on the “Thunderbolts” movie with actress Florence Pugh posting a brief video from the set via the official social media accounts of the studio. That you can see below.
Mackie will return to the MCU as the new Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World” opening next year.
