AEW announced Wednesday that Double or Nothing 2024 will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 26.
This year marks the sixth edition of Double or Nothing, and it will be the third year in a row and fourth time overall that it takes place in Las Vegas.
However, Double or Nothing 2024 is the first Double or Nothing pay-per-view to occur at MGM Grand Garden Arena since the inaugural one in 2019, as the past two Double or Nothing events were at T-Mobile Arena.
The first Double or Nothing in 2019 was a landmark show for AEW since it was the first pay-per-view to officially take place under the AEW banner.
AEW Dynamite did not begin airing weekly until October 2019, but Double or Nothing in May 2019 laid the groundwork for much of what occurred during AEW’s first year of existence.
On that show, Cody Rhodes beat his older brother, Dustin Rhodes, in a bloody and critically acclaimed bout that still stands as one of the best matches in AEW history.
Also, “Hangman” Adam Page won the Casino Battle Royale and Chris Jericho beat Kenny Omega in the main event, setting up a match between Page and Jericho to crown the inaugural AEW world champion at All Out 2019.
However, the most notable happening at Double or Nothing 2019 was the debut of Jon Moxley following his departure from WWE.
Moxley showed up after the main event between Jericho and Omega, entering through the crowd to a massive reaction by the fans in attendance.
Over the past five years, Mox has gone on to become one of the most important parts of AEW, having held the AEW World Championship three times, which is more than anyone else.
Double or Nothing 2024 is two pay-per-views down the line for AEW, as the company’s next major event is the inaugural Dynasty PPV on April 21.
That show figures to feature three of AEW’s recent, massive free-agent signings in Mercedes Moné, Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay.
All of them are likely to be in big matches at Double or Nothing as well, in addition to Samoa Joe, Bryan Danielson, Moxley, Page, Toni Storm, The Young Bucks, Christian Cage, Adam Copeland and Swerve Strickland, among others.
