“As part of DE&I (diversity, equity, and inclusion) India chapter, the key focus area for 2024 is to make our workplace inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Arppna Mehra, vice-president of HR, global digital transformation solutions, and HR head at Harman India. “We plan to add them to our workforce this year and it’s extremely critical for us to get the organisation ready by introducing inclusive policies to support and enable their success,” she said.
Alongside supportive policies and LGBTQ+ awareness initiatives, the company has also implemented “health insurance plans covering gender confirmation surgeries and hormonal therapies, providing vital support for employees undergoing transition”, Mehra said.
Harman is focused on connected technologies for automotive, consumer and professional audio, and enterprise markets.
As part of its commitment to DEI, the firm has set up a Pride employee resource group (ERG), which now comprises over 50 employees. It is also promoting awareness of the LGBTQ+ community through initiatives like treasure hunts and Queer Quiz.
“We have also partnered with organisations such as Pride Circle and Ask Insights to conduct sensitisation workshops, educating employees about inclusive language and behaviours,” Mehra said. “The focus is on creating an environment where individuals from the LGBTQ+ community feel accepted, empowered, and free from discrimination,” she said.
Harman in India has about 10,000 employees.
