Barr’s edge Nemo to take lone lead at league summit

Old rivals St Finbarr’s and Nemo Rangers went into round three of the McCarthy Insurance Cork Football League locked together at the top of Division 1.

When Shane Scanlon blew the final whistle in Trabeg on Easter Sunday morning, it was the Barr’s who occupied top spot as a result of their 1-10 to 1-8 victory over their foes.

Michael Shields rolled back the years for the Togher side as he kicked 1-2 while Cillian Myers Murray with 0-3 and Denis O’Brien with 0-2 also impressed.

Shields’ old Cork comrade, Paul Kerrigan, had 1-1 for Nemo and Ronan Dalton contributed 0-3.

Below them, Castlehaven got back to winning ways after they edged Newcestown by 1-10 to 1-7 on Good Friday.

Newcestown led by 0-4 to 0-3 at the break but a goal from Conor Nolan nine minutes into the second half swung the tie in the home side’s favour.

A major from Conor Goggin did keep Newcestown in touch, but the Haven, for whom Andrew Whelton and Michael Hurley both kicked 0-3, offered a bit more in attack despite the 0-2 registered by both Olan Walsh and Eddie Kennealy for the visitors.

Carrigaline bounced back impressively from a loss to Newcestown a fortnight ago to defeat Cill na Martra by 3-14 to 1-5.

Niall Coakley raised Carrig’s first green flag after 10 minutes and though Jason Mac Cárthaigh responded in kind for the Gaeltacht side, the rest of the game belonged to the Carrigdhoun men.

0-5 from Éanna Desmond and a goal from Callum Barrett propelled them into a 2-8 to 1-1 interval lead. Desmond kicked another 0-3 on the resumption, and Kevin O’Reilly converted goal number 3 to help their side to a comfortable victory.

Carbery Rangers earned their first win of the campaign after they bested Ballincollig by 0-11 to 0-8 in Rosscarbery on Saturday.

Ballincollig led by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break thanks to 0-3 from Dara Dorgan but five on the spin from the home side after the break put them in a winning position that they weren’t to surrender.

Darragh Hayes and Brian Shanahan both had 0-3 for Ross while Donnacha Desmond had 0-2 for the ‘Collig to supplement the efforts of Dorgan.

Goals from Jack Murphy and Daniel Healy were pivotal for Éire Óg as they recorded an impressive 2-11 to 0-8 win over Douglas.

The duo also kicked 0-5 between them while Colm Joyce registered half of Douglas’ scores.

In Division 2, Dohenys continue to set the pace after they made it four wins from four after a hard-earned victory over Clyda Rovers in Mourneabbey on Saturday.

A quickfire start proved crucial for the visitors as points from Adam O’Donovan and Keith White along with a Gavin Farr goal gave them a 1-2 to 0-0 lead.

Clyda played into the elements but 0-6 from Eoghan Walsh meant that they trailed by 1-7 to 0-6 at the break.

However, a Johnny Kelly goal on the resumption pushed Dohenys further clear. Another 0-4 from Walsh brought Clyda close, but not close enough as they lost out by 2-7 to 0-12.

Valley Rovers clocked up their second win of the league after they easily saw off the challenge of O’Donovan Rossa in Brinny on Friday night.

Goals from Rory O’Sullivan and Eoin O’Reilly along with 0-5 from Fiachra Lynch gave them a 2-9 to 0-2 interval lead. Lynch had a brace of points in the second half as Jonathan Kenneally fired home their third goal to help them to a 3-15 to 0-10 win.

Béal Átha‘n Ghaorthaidh also had their shooting boots on as they easily saw off Fermoy by 2-19 to 0-2 on Saturday. 1-2 from Conchúr Ó Loingsigh and 0-3 from Donagh Seartan helped them into a 1-9 to 0-2 interval lead, and from there they didn’t look back as Ó Loingsigh went on to kick 1-6 in the second half.

Clonakilty made it two wins from two as they edged St Michael’s by 1-9 to 0-8 in Mahon. 1-1 from Sean McEvoy and 0-4 from Brian White proved crucial for the visitors while Andrew Murphy and Eric Hegarty both had 0-2 for the home side.

Finally, Knocknagree took the honours in the Duhallow derby as they defeated Kiskeam by 2-7 to 0-9.

Denis O’Connor and Niall O’Connor raised the green flags for Knocknagree while for Kiskeam, Thomas Casey kicked 0-4.
