The Jacksonville Jaguars surely hope they never have to play their backup quarterback, but they can at least take solace knowing they didn’t give much up to land Mac Jones.
“Getting Mac Jones for a bag of peanuts makes sense with Trevor Lawrence’s playing style inviting injury, especially when you see the going rate for the (Gardner) Minshews of the world,” an NFL executive said, per Mike Sando of The Athletic.
Jacksonville acquired Jones via trade from the New England Patriots for a 2024 sixth-round draft pick.
By comparison, the Las Vegas Raiders signed Minshew to a two-year, $25 million deal with $15 million in guarantees.
Jones never lived up to expectations as the No. 15 overall pick of the 2021 draft, but he is at least an experienced fall-back option for the Jaguars should Lawrence suffer an injury. Jones made 42 starts across three seasons for New England and could at least keep the offense afloat if needed.
In a perfect world for the Jaguars, they won’t have to worry about that.
Lawrence has missed just one game in his first three seasons and is the team’s best chance at returning to the playoffs after missing out during the 2023 campaign.
