MPs rejected amendments to the Rwanda plan (Image: Getty)
Members of Parliament rejected a series of “totally pointless” amendments unelected Lords made to Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda plan over fears they could ground flights to Kigali.
The plan will now return to the House of Lords on Tuesday for further scrutiny after ministers suggested the amendments would water down the legislation.
Earlier Illegal Migration Minister Michael Tomlinson insisted that “we simply cannot accept amendments” that leave legal loopholes to ground flights to Kigali.
The plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda has faced a series of knock backs since it was introduced by Boris Johnson’s government in 2022.

But legislation aimed at declaring Rwanda safe should pass due to the Conservative majority in Parliament being enough to overturn the Lords.
On Monday night, six amendments – including one to make people who had supported the Armed Forces overseas exempt and another victims of modern slavery – were defeated in the Commons.
Another amendment that was overturned would have given the courts the ability to ground flights to the African nation.
Speaking in the Commons, Conservative MP Sir Bill Cash said: “The real question now is, let’s get this Bill done, let’s get the House of Lords to calm down a bit, let us also at the same time wait for what is inevitably going to be another claim and then see what the judgment of the Supreme Court is on the wording – providing it is clear and unambiguous – of this Bill.”

When they next debate the Bill, Peers could send it back to the Commons, known as “parliamentary ping-pong”.
However, once passed it is expected to take a minimum of six weeks for the first migrants to be readied for deportation to Kigali, as there are several legal and practical obstacles to overcome.
Many will be wondering how their MP voted on the hotly-debated legislation. Below is a list of how each MP voted on the amendments proposed by the Lords.
Motion to disagree with Lords Amendment 1B
Lords Amendment 1B was designed to require ministers to have “due regard for domestic and international law” in the legislation.
