Samsung Surpasses Apple as Top Smartphone Maker in Q1 2024
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Samsung has reclaimed its throne as the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, dethroning Apple in the first quarter of 2024, as per the latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Apple experienced a 10% decline in smartphone shipments during this period, facing intensified competition from Android counterparts vying for supremacy.

Global smartphone shipments saw a 7.8% surge, totalling 289.4 million units from January to March.

Samsung secured a 20.8% market share, surpassing Apple to claim the top spot, while Apple settled at 17.3% market share.

Notably, Apple had surpassed Samsung for the first time in 2023, reaching a market share of 20.8% by the year’s end.

The top five phone makers Including Samsung

The top five smartphone manufacturers witnessed a reshuffle, with Samsung shipping 60.1 million smartphones in Q1 2024 to secure the leading position, while Apple shipped 50.1 million devices during the same period.

Xiaomi, a prominent Chinese player, held the third spot with a 14.1% market share, shipping 40.8 million smartphones.

Transsion, owning brands like Tecno, Infinix, and iTel, clinched the fourth position with 28.5 million devices shipped.

Oppo rounded up the top five with 25.2 million devices shipped, capturing an 8.7% market share.

Despite lingering macroeconomic challenges in various markets, IDC observed a steady growth in smartphone shipments, marking the third consecutive quarter of recovery.

Steady growth in smartphone shipments

Ryan Reith, Group Vice President of IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, expressed optimism about market recovery, emphasizing Samsung’s resurgence and anticipating continued competition between top brands.

“As expected, smartphone recovery continues to move forward with market optimism slowly building among the top brands,” said Ryan Reith, Group Vice President, IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.

“While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter.

While IDC expects these two companies to maintain their hold on the high-end of the market, the resurgence of Huawei in China, as well as notable gains from Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and vivo will likely have both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) looking for areas to expand and diversify.

“As the recovery progresses, we’re likely to see the top companies gain share as the smaller brands struggle for positioning,” he added.

Nabila Popal, Research Director at IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team, echoed Reith’s sentiments, highlighting a shift in power among the top five companies and an ongoing trend of consumers opting for higher-value devices.

Popal anticipated further adjustments in market strategies as the industry emerges from the disruptions of the past two years, anticipating a stronger and transformed smartphone market landscape.

“Firstly, we continue to see growth in value and average selling prices (ASPs) as consumers opt for more expensive devices knowing they will hold onto their devices longer.

Secondly, there is a shift in power among the Top 5 companies, which will likely continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world,” he said.
