England ‘take handbrake off’ to thrash Ireland as Grand Slam looms, Scotland beat Italy

England play France next weekend in their final match of the Women’s 2024 Six Nations tournament, and after a record 88-10 win over Ireland on Saturday, they are still on course for a Grand Slam clean sweep of this year’s tournament. In the day’s other match, Scotland won in Italy for the first time since 1999 thanks a winning try from Chloe Rollie.

England crushed Ireland 88-10 in their Women’s Six Nations clash at Twickenham on Saturday, scoring 14 tries in the process.

The win means that England remain on course for a Grand Slam ahead of their final match of the 2024 tournament against France.

Both Abby Dow and Ellie Kildunne scored hat-tricks as they put on an emphatic display in front of a crowd of 48,778.

There was also a brace for Megan Jones and Jess Breach as England ran up the scores, with Natasha Hunt and Zoe Aldcroft contributing a try each.

Sadia Kabeya and Maddie Feaunati also crossed the whitewash, while Ireland grabbed a consolation penalty try.

The huge win is England’s biggest ever over Ireland, with the previous record 79-0 in 2002.

England’s player of the match Ellie Kilddune said to the BBC after the match: “We are so happy to play in front of this crowd at our home stadium.

“No discredit to Ireland, but we really turned it on and everyone knew their role – it was enjoyable.”

Discussing John Mitchell’s impact, she added: “We talk a lot about taking the handbrake off and that feeds confidence.

“We try new things and good things come from it – we will just do our thing.

“With a game like today, confidence leads into the next game and we have to focus on the now.

“We have to enjoy what’s happened, we are taking it as it comes.”

Scotland secure rare win in Italy

In the day’s other match, Scotland won 17-10 away against Italy, the first time they had won in the country for 25 years.

Their last win in Italy came in 1999, and there is another losing streak to end next week. They travel to Ireland with the chance to land their third Six Nations win in a tournament for the first time since 2025.

The visiting side had Chloe Rollie to thank to make it 17-7 on 69 minutes, and her team held on despite her late yellow card.
