Nigeria to Invest in Tech to Fight Corruption, Tinubu tells Bill Gates
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

President Bola Tinubu recently announced Nigeria’s new focus on using technology to fight corruption. This move was discussed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the World Economic Forum Special Meeting, where Tinubu spoke with Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and a well-known philanthropist.

Tinubu highlighted that technology is a powerful tool against corruption and other problems in public service. By investing in tech, he believes Nigeria can improve how the government works and serves the public. He stated, “Technology is the enemy of fraud, corruption, and irregularity. We have been working hard on improving technology.”

During his talk with Gates, President Tinubu explained that he plans to use technology to make government operations more transparent, especially with the new national consumer credit system and other important projects soon to be unveiled. Although he recognizes there will be challenges, he remains optimistic about the benefits of a corruption-free system.

Reflecting on his experience as the Governor of Lagos, Tinubu shared how technology helped to increase the state’s revenue significantly. “When I was governor of Lagos State, I faced challenges. I started with N600m and ended up with over N8bn. And right now, they are targeting a trillion naira with the use of technology in the state,” he remarked.

Bill Gates’s contribution to fighting corruption

Bill Gates contributed to the discussion by mentioning a one-identity technological platform that could bring together various data, which is essential for planning, security, and tax efficiency. He noted that earlier efforts in identity management were scattered and incomplete. “Now, there is a plan to take that technology called MOSIP and use it for this identification platform so that people can get digital benefits. We are providing support for that, and we can provide more support,” Gates explained.

Gates believes that this technology will not only make government payments more efficient but also help more Nigerians open bank accounts and enhance tax collection.

“That benefit will take a few years. However, there will be more bank accounts, more financial inclusion, and effective government payment programs,” he added.

He also praised Nigeria’s potential, especially highlighting the talent he saw at Microsoft’s office in Lagos. “You have a lot of Nigerian talents to manage these systems,” Gates affirmed.

Tinubu’s proposed future for the youths

In response to these discussions, President Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s technological future and the role of the nation’s youth. “We will look at this and work on it further. I am proud of Nigeria’s youths.

They are very excited and creative with technology. They encourage us as we continue to press our reform efforts forward for their future prosperity. This is Nigeria’s time to become what it ought to be,” he concluded.

This ambitious technological push by Tinubu could mark a significant step towards a more transparent and efficient governance structure in Nigeria, signaling a hopeful future in the battle against corruption.
