On May 5, William Li, the founder and CEO of NIO, posted a video through his Douyin (Chinese TikTok) account saying that he had spent two days in meetings in the United States. During this time, he also met with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and discussed the direction of AI development.
William Li stated that he participated in an event of the Peking University Northern California Alumni Association during this period and also met with NIO colleagues in the United States. At the end of the video, William Li expressed his hope that new cars from Chinese brands could be sold in the United States sooner.
In July of last year, William Li said in an interview with foreign media, “The world should be more open and not politicize business. Since we established our company in November 2014, the global political climate has completely changed, especially with the division and confrontation caused by the pandemic. Chinese consumers can choose from a variety of (new energy vehicles), why can’t these products also be enjoyed by American consumers?”
In November last year, NIO‘s American CEO, Ganesh Iyer, outlined his vision: to sell the first car in the United States by 2025. He stated that the electric vehicles sold to the American market by the company would still be produced by Chinese factories, as the cost of building factories in the United States is too high. “There are many local suppliers in China who supply us specifically, but they don’t do business in the United States. If I want to build a factory, I need to choose a suitable location where there are many other suppliers. I also need to bring in some of our suppliers who have strategic significance and uniqueness to NIO.”
