Back in late March came the news that “Dead Boy Detectives” and “The Flight Attendant” series creator Steve Yockey had been hired as the new writer for the next “Star Trek” film.
Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot are intending the project to be the final chapter for the ‘Kelvin Timeline’ cast that rebooted the films starting with 2009’s “Star Trek” and starring the likes of Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto.
However the hiring came as a surprise to Pine who, out promoting his directorial debut “Poolman,” tells Business Insider he was confused by the hire indicating that he thought the script was done.
Asked for any further updates on the film’s progress, he said he’s as in the dark as everyone else:
“I honestly don’t know. There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it’s always been with ‘Trek,’ I just wait and see.”
Whilst the TV arm of the franchise has flourished over the past decade, the film’s have been stalled since 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond” launched to underwhelming results. At least three previous attempts to revive the film side of the franchise have fallen apart in the eight year period.
The project is also separate from a standalone “Star Trek” film that writer Seth Grahame-Smith and director Toby Haynes are developing which aims to serve as a semi-origin story for the franchise – set likely decades before the Enterprise voyages in the late 22nd/early 23rd century (a time period Trek hasn’t really explored).
