Nigerian artistes scooped up N25 billion of Spotify’s revenue paid as royalties in 2023, and among the new winners is the Igbo Pop genre.
That amount was 100 percent uptick compared to the 2022 rakings, and 2500 percent of the 2017 payout.
And more than half of these royalties went to independent artistes or labels.
Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s managing director for Sub-Saharan Africa, revealed this as part of the highlight of streaming platform’s 2023 report.
“Spotify listeners discovered Nigerian artistes nearly 950 million times in 2023,” she said of the report called Loud & Clear.
Nigerian artistes also own over 80 per cent of the tracks featured on Nigeria’s daily top 50 chart in the same year.
Muhutu-Remy further revealed that the number of Nigerian artistes earning over N10m in royalties has quadrupled since 2018.
Afrobeats remains a chartbuster still, even leading Nigerian Pop, Afropop, Nigerian Hip Hop and Afro Rhymes and Blues in export.
But Highlife got a significant increase in listenership in the last 12 months by 224 per cent, Igbo Pop by 303 per cent, and Fuji by 187 per cent.
And the increase is spilling over to 2024. Highlife, Fuji and Igbo Pop saw listenership, mostly men, increase in the first quarter of 2024 by 240 per cent, 175 per cent, and 270 per cent respectively compared to the same quarter last year.
According to her, top artistes remained Fuji King K1 De Ultimate on top, while Highlife finds new life with Umu Obiligbo‘s energy and Phyno for Igbo Pop.
“For top tracks, Fuji gets a fresh spin with Adewale Ayuba’s Koloba Koloba, Highlife goes nostalgic with Chief Osita Osadebe’s Nwanem Ebezina.” She said. “Igbo Pop gets a vibrant boost with KCee’s Ojapiano.”
“However, Gen Z, aged 18 to 24 is the leading age group across all the three genres, making up 32 percent of Fuji listeners, 31 percent of Highlife listeners, and 46 percent of Igbo Pop listeners.
Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Katsina all top the charts for streaming these local genres – Fuji, Highlife, and Igbo Pop.
