Nintendo have been doubling down of late on old-school gaming remakes for the Switch console.
With the handheld in its final days ahead of the upcoming Switch 2, the Mario firm seems content in pumping out new-look versions of classic titles from decades past.
And Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is the latest in a long line of lovingly re-crafted games of yesteryear given a modern makeover for today’s audience.
The results are, as you’d expect from this accomplished gaming firm, excellent – with this Paper Mario title easily fitting in with the rest of the modern Mario gaming series.
It looks colourful and absolutely stands-out on the Switch OLED screen, with wonderful vibrancy and plenty of cutesy personality packed into the RPG.
You’d be forgiven for thinking its a brand new title and not a 20-year-old GameCube favourite with a quick look at it in action from afar.
you team up with other characters who have special abilities
In the game, you of course play that red-hatted plumbing hero we all know and love as you take to the surprisingly violent town of Rogueport to hunt down and discover the legendary treasure behind the ancient Thousand-Year Door.
The town is packed full of both funny moments and ‘ruffians’ to do battle with in turn-based role-play fighting as you strive forward to unearth Crystal Stars, ancient artefacts that open the Thousand-Year Door buried deep beneath the town.
It leads to plenty of showdowns with Sir Grodus and the X-nauts as they’ll also hunting down the seven stars.
And the gaming mechanic for the battles feels fresh as a daisy.
You not only have to time you trusty hammer or jump attacks as per other Mario RPG games but also appeal to the ever-watching theatre crowds that surround your fights.
Get them on side and it helps to turn the tide in a brawl, adding in special attacks, and you might even have to take in a gift from time to time.
There are monsters and meanies in Rogueport to battle
It’s all intuitive and easily understandable, even for a first-timer, to play and delve into the heart of battle alongside a character parter.
And this revamped version goes a step more than the original in having a fight tutor available for you to call on to get hints and learn the ropes.
There’s plenty to see and discover in the nooks and crannies of the wider world around you, outside of the fighting, and it’s really worth going back on yourself to properly cover Rogueport, especially when you get new abilities like flying as a paper aeroplane.
Overall a beautiful looking game, one that feels fresh and in-keeping with recent modern Mario efforts.
Rogueport is packed with fun and danger in equal parts and tons of personality, almost a character itself.
And Mario of course holds it all together with some wonderful gameplay, comedy and an interesting storyline.
