The New York Yankees have placed Clarke Schmidt on the 15-day injury list after the right-handed starting pitcher suffered a right lat strain, the team announced Thursday.
The Yankees also announced that they have recalled right-handed reliever Cody Morris from Triple-A.
The news comes ahead of New York’s final game of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. The Yankees won the second matchup 2-1 after dropping the first game of the series 4-3.
In 11 appearances this season, Schmidt has recorded 67 strikeouts, a 2.52 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. He’s appeared in 60.2 innings, notching a 5-3 record.
With the help of Schmidt, the Yankees have notched the best ERA in the majors at 2.76 through the early part of the season. They’ve achieved that number despite being without ace Gerrit Cole, who has not played yet this season while dealing with a right elbow injury.
With Schmidt now set to miss some time, New York is hoping Cole will be able to get back onto the mound soon to help the team keep up its outstanding pitching. The reigning Cy Young Award winner is making progress in his rehab, reportedly throwing 43 pitches on Thursday.
In the meantime, the Yankees will look to Morris to help out in relief.
Morris has a 2.82 ERA across 22.1 innings and 13 games this season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 27-year-old was called up earlier this season but did not make an appearance.
His last time stepping on the mound in the majors came last August for the Cleveland Guardians. In six appearances last year, Morris had a 6.75 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP in eight innings.
Now getting a chance for the Yankees, Morris will look to give New York’s bullpen an added edge.
