What better way to end the 2024 NCAA softball season than with a rematch of the 2022 Women’s College World Series finals? Texas takes on Oklahoma in a classic Red River Rivalry. This time, winner is crowned a national champion.
Two years ago, the Sooners dominated their Big 12 rivals, sweeping them 16-1 and 10-5. It was a disappointing result in Texas’ first finals appearance, though it fought through the tournament unseeded. This time, and for the first time, the Longhorns are the No. 1 seed. They were perfect in their first three WCWS games this year, shutting out Stanford, Florida then Stanford again to return to the championship stage.
Little needs to be said about the Sooners’ history in the finals. They’ve won seven titles, three coming in the last three years, and all of them coached by Patty Gasso. Should they win again, Oklahoma will be the first team to win four consecutive NCAA softball titles. UCLA, the winningest program with 12 national titles, won three straight beginning in 1988 before losing the finals in 1991.
