Experts are warning that a Labour government will lead to bigger increases in the BBC licence fee, a telly tax that Britons must pay or face imprisonment. The licence fee is set to rise annually between now and 2027, the rest of the Charter period.
The tax has already risen from £159 to £169.50 this year, but one expert says that inflation will increase under a Labour Government, and by implication so will the BBC fee. Dr Roger J Gewolb has warned inflation will go back up under Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves.
He told GB News: “Labour’s poor grasp of economics and monetary policy will no doubt allow this dreadful state of affairs to continue and even increase as they spend more and more money”.
“Their undoubted profligate spending will mean more money being printed, more borrowing, and more interest unnecessarily paid by the Bank of England to the banks, depleting the national treasury further and putting pressure on virtually all sectors of the economy with prices rising and inflation going back up again.”
Top think tank The Taxpayers’ Alliance said: “Any rise in the cost of the license fee is unacceptable given the coercion involved. Brits are forced to pay the TV tax under the threat of possible imprisonment, despite the archaic and backwards nature of this funding system, which long ago lost relevance.
“The next government should scrap the licence fee and force the Beeb to stand on its own two feet.”

Ex Tory Minister says he’s voting Labour
Tory deserter Chris Skidmore, who rage quit the Commons earlier this year over the Government’s Net Zero plans, has said he will be voting Labour at the election.
Mr Skidmore accused Rishi Sunak of “siding with climate deniers”.
He added: “For the first time, I cannot vote for a party that has boasted of new oil and gas licences in its manifesto or that now argues that net zero is a burden and not a benefit”.
“Instead, like many others who know that we have neither choice nor any more time, and need to tackle the climate crisis now, I have decided that the Labour party is best placed to achieve economic growth and the green industrial revolution.”

What to expect on the campaign trail today
Good morning – only 13 days left of the election.
Rishi Sunak will be in Wales today as he launches the Tories’ Welsh manifesto. He will warn voters not to hand Labour a ‘blank cheque’ that they can’t get back after Sir Keir is in No. 10.
Meanwhile the SNP will be trying to get back on the front foot after a very low energy campaign, by wheeling out none other than Nicola Sturgeon.
Nigel Farage will hit the spotlight this evening as he faces down Nick Robinson in his Panorama leaders’ debate.
