Comme pour la Course sprint, c’est un soleil de plomb qui a accueilli les pilotes pour la Course principale de la F2 sur le Hungaroring. La première ligne était à 100 % aux couleurs d’Alpine, Jack Doohan ayant signé la pole devant Victor Martins, tandis que Théo Pourchaire était en deuxième ligne avec Frederik Vesti, le leader du championnat.

Doohan a conservé la tête au départ, tandis que Vesti a profité du côté propre de la piste pour s’emparer de la deuxième place. Martins et Pourchaire suivaient devant le troisième pilote français, Isack Hadjar. Dès le troisième tour, le troisième tricolore, Clément Novalak, a abandonné sur panne mécanique.

Doohan n’a pas réussi à creuser l’écart sur Vesti en début de course, mais les deux hommes ont vite mis un écart avec Martins et Pourchaire, qui voyait Hadjar le menacer. Ce dernier était premier d’un quatuor de pilotes junior Red Bull, devant Ayumu Iwasa, Dennis Hauger et Enzo Fittipaldi. Ollie Bearman et Juan Manuel Correa complétaient le top 10.

Zane Maloney a été le premier à s’arrêter pour changer de pneus, au terme du septième des 37 tours de course. La dégradation des pneus était évidemment cruciale pour cette course, avec un asphalte de plus en plus chaud. Jak Crawford et Ralf Boschung ont été les suivants à s’arrêter.

Crawford a subi les attaques de Maloney et a envoyé à deux reprises son adversaire dans l’herbe, dont une fois dans la ligne droite des stands, où Maloney a escaladé le vibreur à pleine vitesse, manquant de peu de perdre le contrôle de sa Dallara. L’incident a été noté par les commissaires.

Pourchaire s’est arrêté et est ressorti 13e juste devant Hadjar, tandis que Hauger a lui aussi chaussé des pneus plu durs, et a repris la piste derrière les deux hommes. Devant, Doohan ne s’était pas encore arrêté et avait près de deux secondes d’avance sur Vesti, qui possédait une marge similaire sur Martins.

Bearman, Roy Nissany et Leclerc se sont arrêtés en même temps, ressortant entre les 14e et 17e place, autour de Maloney. Cordeel, qui avait fait perdre du temps à Hadjar notamment, s’est arrêté au 22e tour, juste avant que Vesti ne s’arrête.

Le deuxième de la course s’était fait décrocher par Doohan, ses pneus étant en grande difficulté, et il accusait plus de cinq secondes de retard sur l’Australien. Il est ressorti 1″4 devant Pourchaire.

Martins s’est ensuite arrêté, et est ressorti juste devant Pourchaire. Ce dernier a attaqué dans le virage 4, mais son équipier a résisté et il est sorti de piste, permettant à Hadjar de le dépasser. Doohan s’est arrêté et est ressorti largement en tête, avec 7 secondes de marge sur Vesti. Martins était désormais solidement accroché au podium, devant Hadjar et Vesti.

La fin de course a été difficile pour Théo Pourchaire, qui a vu Iwasa le dépasser pour la cinquième place. Le Français a heureusement pu limiter les dégâts lors d’une fin de course plutôt calme, pour éviter de se faire attaquer par Hauger.

Devant lui en revanche, Hadjar était sous la menace d’Iwasa, qui revenait grâce à un excellent rythme en pneus tendres. Le Japonais s’est emparé de la quatrième place, sans réussir à décrocher le Français. Quant à Pourchaire, il a résisté jusqu’au bout à Hauger.

Rien n’est venu perturber la marche victorieuse de Jack Doohan, qui s’est imposé devant Vesti. Le pilote Prema creusait grâce à ce résultat l’écart sur Pourchaire au championnat. Martins termine de nouveau sur le podium, devant Iwasa, Hadjar et Pourchaire. Hauger, Fittipaldi, Correa et Richard Verschoor complètent le top 10, tandis qu’Arthur Leclerc a terminé 13e.
