Bulldozer action in Thane on illegal bars and pubs amid row over Pune drugs case

Amid ongoing political slugfest and blame-game over the viral videos of alleged consumption of drugs by youngsters in Pune hotel, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has initiated bulldozer action on several illegal bars and pubs in the city.

The action was taken on the order of TMC commissioner Saurabh Rao in various wards of the city after Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s ordered to make Thane and Mira-Bhayander areas drug-free.

Just two days ago, a similar action was taken on various establishments in Pune after two youths were allegedly seen consuming drugs in the washroom of Liquid Leisure Lounge bar which remained open violating prescribe time limit.

The TMC said that action was taken on pubs, bars and illegal establishments engaged in drug-related activities.

“A total of 31 paan stalls within 100 meters of schools and colleges in the Municipal Corporation jurisdiction were seized. Whereas, 8 illegal establishments were razed including hotels, pubs, bars and nine other sheds were demolished,” said the TMC.

In Wagle Estate area, action was taken against Panchsheel Bar, Indian Taste Bar, unauthorised pan stalls and gutkha vendors.

The action was also taken on Secret Bar and Hookah Parlour in Vartak Nagar Ward Committee area as well as pubs and bars located in Kothari Compound. The unauthorized construction of Social House Pub was also demolished.

In Uthalsar, the action was initiated on unauthorized hotels and hookah parlours.

Similarly, the construction of Khushi Ladies Bar on Ghodbunder Road and Mayuri Ladies Bar at Ovala were razed to the ground.

TMC Deputy Commissioner GG Godepure said that the action will continue until the unauthorised hotels, pubs and bars in the municipal jurisdiction are completely evicted.

Earlier, the chief minister said that stringent measures need to be taken as consumption of narcotic drugs was leaving a bad impact on the younger generation.
