Torrential rainfall submerged the entire Delhi-NCR on Friday (June 28), bringing the city to a standstill amid severe traffic jams and widespread waterlogging in various areas.
This was the highest rainfall received in India’s national capital in the last 88 years.
The Indian Meteorological Department said that from 8:30 am on Thursday (June 27) to 8:30 am on Friday (June 28) Delhi received 228 mm of rainfall, which marked the highest 24-hour rainfall in June in the national capital since 1936 when 235.5 mm of rainfall was recorded.
The MET department said that IMD’s Safdarjung airport observatory recorded 234.5mm rainfall between June 1 to June 28, which is the third highest in the last 124 years.
Life impacted in Delhi-NCR amid deluge
Daily life was significantly impacted in the national capital by the torrential rains as commuters faced traffic jams and severe waterlogging issues on the road.
Nearly two to three feet of water accumulated at major intersections like ITO which led to extensive traffic jams.
The Hanuman Temple Intersection towards Mandi House was filled with nearly feet of water and there were road closures and disruptions on Ashoka Road, Feroz Shah Road, and Connaught Place. The areas near Moolchand were also inundated.
Bus submerges in water, passengers wear life jackets
A bus with passengers got stuck under the flooded Kodia Bridge underpass in Kishanganj and was pulled out by police and rescue teams on Friday (June 28).
The bus remained stranded for more than two hours because of the flooding. The passengers were seen swimming towards the safer zone using ropes and wearing life jackets.
Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena took note of the preparedness for the emergency response system and instructed the establishment of an emergency control room which will be manned 24×7. He further instructed the utilisation of the mobile pumps.
IMD confirms the onset of the Southwest monsoon
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (June 28) said that the rainfall marked the onset of the Southwest monsoon in Delhi.

The IMD stated that the monsoon has also advanced into parts of West Rajasthan, remaining parts of East Rajasthan, parts of Haryana, some more parts of West Uttar Pradesh; remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and parts of East Uttar Pradesh on Friday (June 28).
