The recent UK Parliament elections marked a milestone for diversity and representation, as six politicians of Nigerian-British descent secured victories.
This group of dynamic individuals has not only triumphed in their respective constituencies but also symbolises the growing influence of multicultural backgrounds in shaping British politics.
Let’s take a closer look at each of them:
1. Chi Onwurah
Chi successfully secured her position once again for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West, representing the Labour Party. With a total of 18,875 votes, Onwurah, born on April 12, 1965, and a former Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy, remains a key figure in her party.
2. Kemi Badenoch
Kemi from the Conservative Party won the Saffron Walden seat with 19,360 votes, beating Labour’s Issy Waiter who had 16,750 votes. Despite her party’s overall losses, Badenoch’s personal victory was a standout.
3. Kate Osamor
Kate has represented Edmonton since 2015, but this area was dissolved in 2024. Osamor, aged 55, also served as the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development between 2016 and 2018.
4. Florence Eshalomi
Florence represented Vauxhall until its abolition in 2024. Aged 43, she was not only an MP but also served on the London Assembly for Lambeth and Southwark from 2016 to 2021. She’s a member of both the Labour and Co-operative parties.
5. Taiwo Owatemi
He won Coventry North West for the Labour Party with a significant lead, securing 19,696 votes against the Conservative’s Tom Mercer, who got 8,522 votes. Owatemi, 32, was the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities from September 2021 to September 2022.
6. Bayo Alaba
