Former US president Donald Trump (78) is reported to be safe after an assassination attempt on him, during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter who allegedly attacked the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump during his election rally in Pennsylvania was shot dead by the Secret Service, law enforcement officials said.
Former President Trump is confirmed to be safe after the attempted assassination. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility,” said Steven Cheung, Trump spokesperson. Leaders from across party lines have condemned the attack. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton have all denounced the incident.
“US Secret Service personnel neutralised the shooter, who is now deceased. The federal agency quickly responded with protective measures and Former President Trump is safe,” stated Anthony Guglielmi, Secret Service spokesperson. He added, “This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available.”
Reports indicate blood was visible on Trump’s face and ear as he gestured towards his neck with his right hand. Witnesses recounted hearing multiple gunshots while Trump addressed the rally. Despite the chaos, Trump pumped his fist in the air as he was escorted away by the Secret Service.
Guglielmi reported, “One spectator was killed, and two others were critically injured. The Secret Service has notified the FBI.” An eyewitness described seeing a “man on top of a roof” near the rally, saying, “We noticed the guy crawling up the roof of the building beside us, 50 feet away from us. He had a rifle, we could clearly see him with a rifle. Next thing you know, I’m thinking to myself why is Trump still speaking? Why have they not pulled him off the stage? I’m standing there pointing at him… the next thing you know, five shots ring out.”
President Biden and Vice President Harris were briefed on the incident and have condemned the violence. Biden stated, “There is no place for this kind of violence in America,” expressing gratitude to the Secret Service for ensuring Trump’s safety. “We must unite as one nation to condemn it,” he added.
Vice President Harris expressed relief that Trump was not seriously injured, saying, “We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting.” She emphasized, “Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the incident, stating, “Political violence has no place in our country.” Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley echoed the sentiment, saying, “Violence against presidential candidates must never be normalised.”
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of social media platform X, expressed his support for Trump, stating, “Fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.”
Indian-American Vivek Ramaswamy, a close confidant of Trump, simply said, “Pray for Trump.”
