Japanese high school students hospitalized after eating India’s bhut jolokia potato chips

According to authorities, 14 high school students in Tokyo were sent to the hospital on Tuesday after consuming “extremely spicy” potato chips.

One student brought the crisps to school, and about thirty students ate them, according to the sources.

The crisps were brought to the school “just for fun” by a male student who loved them and found it “super spicy” when he first tried them.

Soon, some of them began complaining of nausea and extreme pain in their mouths, triggering emergency calls to the fire department and police.

The 13 girls and one boy who were sent to the hospital were conscious and reported having minor symptoms.

Isoyama Corp, the company that makes the snack, issued a statement sorry for “any inconvenience” to customers and wishing the youngsters a speedy recovery. The company’s website is full of warnings for anybody who might want to eat the crisps. The crisps in question are referred to as “R 18+ Curry Chips” due to their high level of spice.

The powerful “ghost pepper,” known as bhut jolokia in northeastern India, is the source of the spiciness. It is one of the hottest chillies in the world, although it is used in Indian and other recipes.

According to the company’s website, people with high blood pressure or weak stomachs “are absolutely prohibited” from eating the crisps. It urges persons with injuries on their fingers to be cautious when opening the packs.
