The New York Jets explored ways to improve their offense this offseason, and one of the avenues they took to try and do that involved Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith.
Per The Athletic’s new podcast “Scoop City” that features former NFL signal-caller Chase Daniel and insider Dianna Russini, the Jets talked to Smith about being involved in play-calling duties to help offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
Smith, who was relieved of his head-coaching duties by the Atlanta Falcons after the 2023 campaign, landed with the Steelers instead and will oversee an offense that was among the league’s worst last season.
The biggest issue the Jets had on offense in 2023 was the injury to star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who tore his Achilles’ tendon in Week 1, which led to the team having to rely on Zach Wilson more than anyone should.
Hackett’s play-calling didn’t help much and was yet another stain on his record after his disastrous one-year tenure as the head coach of the Denver Broncos.
The fact that the Jets were looking to hire Smith to help with play-calling duties in some capacity doesn’t show much confidence in Hackett, and that might not bode well for his future with the team.
However, he does have the continued support of Rodgers, which will certainly help him keep his job if things don’t start off good in the Big Apple.
As far as Smith is concerned, he returns to a role in which he thrived during his days with the Tennessee Titans, and he’ll do so with the Steelers having a much better situation under center than they did in 2023.
