Martin Scorsese’s previously teased “The Life of Jesus” feature is not only happening, a new report at World of Reel indicates it is going to go in production this Fall with October a likely start date.
The outlet says they can confirm Andrew Garfield, who previously worked with Scorsese on the acclaimed “Silence,” will star in the project which marks their second Shūsaku Endō novel adaptation together.
The previously linked Miles Teller is a “maybe at the moment”. The film is expected to be a tight 80 minutes or so, and is set in the present day.
The director previously said that the film will focus on “Jesus’ core teachings in a way that explores the principles but doesn’t proselytize”.
It’s also not expected to be a “straight narrative” or a “documentary”, but a “combination of things” in an aim to make Jesus’ story “more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion.”
In other words it’ll be more about the man than the myth. Scorsese and critic/filmmaker Kent Jones are penning the script.
Production is expected to take place in Italy, Egypt and Israel, and is tipped to be one of the more cost-effective Scorsese works in some time. Scorsese’s also been shooting a documentary about ancient shipwrecks in Sicily recently.
