Royal holidays aren’t necessarily extravagant affairs: from simply enjoying the fresh air of country retreats to splashing in Mediterranean waters steeped in family history, this is where you’re most likely to find a Family member with their hair down.

Royals: Expert says it’s ‘difficult’ for family to book holidays

Lavish palaces, a fleet of vehicles, an army of bodyguards and more attracting more attention than pop stars, in many respects the royals are miles apart from the public.

Every time August rolls around, however, they certainly love shooting off on holiday like the rest of us.

Well ahead of the recent staycation trend, members of the Firm often kick back at Sandringham in Norfolk for a while – although the 20,000-acre estate is more commonly where they spend Christmas.

When the sun comes out, they’ve been known to venture far beyond to make the most of its rays.

Spanning three Continents from the tips of the UK to the heart of Africa, Express.co.uk has mapped where the working monarchy clocks off.

The Scottish Highlands

Balmoral

Balmoral in Aberdeenshire has been part of the royal estate since 1852, when Prince Albert bought it for Queen Victoria. More recently, it is known for having been Queen Elizabeth’s most beloved private residence – where she would go every summer to zip around in her Range Rover, ride horses on the 50,000-acre grounds or explore its mountains, forests and lochs.

Various members of the Royal Family would make the trip up to spend time with her there, from her son and successor King Charles III and wife Queen Camilla, to the Prince and Princess of Wales to Princess Eugenie and Beatrice of York.

Now that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are on their school summer holidays, they’re almost certain to join in on the family tradition, hosted by their newly-crowned grandfather for the first time this year.

Prince Andrew, however, who usually spends two weeks there around this time, is likely to have his plans derailed amid an ongoing spat with the King over his use of royal properties, despite having been stripped of his titles.

Tresco, Isles of Scilly

Another UK spot much-loved by the royals is Tresco, on the Isles of Scilly, the archipelago off the tip of Cornwall. The family owns Dolphin House there, a cottage members of the public can rent out whenever it isn’t earmarked for someone in the direct line of succession.

According to the islands’ tourism board, the islands are “outstandingly beautiful, uncrowded and unspoilt.” Boasting white sands, turquoise waters and rare birds, all without the disturbance of cars, its easy to see why.

Prince William visited when he was young, alongside his parents and brother, and was seen there with his wife and trio of kids in 2021.

Mustique, Caribbean

From the “Cornish Caribbean” to the real thing, Mustique – a tiny private island of just 1,400 acres in St Vincent and the Grenadines – was first frequented by the late Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister.

Back in 1959, British aristocrat and socialite, Colin Tennant gave the Les Jolies Eaux villa to her, and royals have been making the most of it ever since.

Princess Kate holidayed there with her family even before she married the now heir to the throne, and in 2019 the couple dropped in on the 50th-anniversary of the island’s world-famous Basil’s Bar, with Mick Jagger also in attendance.

Corfu, Greece

As for King Charles, he seems to prefer the Greek island where his father, Prince Philip, was born back in 1921.

He and his wife have been spotted on multiple occasions relaxing on Corfu beneath the olive trees. In 2017 they also spent time on a superyacht moored just off its pearly blue shores.

Last summer, Prince Edward and his family also spent two weeks on the island, signalling that the place is one of significance for the younger royals too.

Botswana, Africa

This one belongs solely to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. For their third date, Prince Harry made the somewhat radical proposition to jet off to Botswana, reportedly to Meno A Kwena, in the Makgadikgadi National Park.

In their 2017 engagement interview, the Duke reminisced: “We camped out with each other under the stars.” He added: “We were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to get to know each other.”

The camp is said to be lovingly decorated with old-timey furnishings in teak and leather. The couple returned the following year to celebrate the former actress’s birthday.
