Highlights: Alcaraz beats competitive Shelton in Toronto opener
Nick Kyrgios will miss the 2023 US Open, tournament organisers have confirmed.
The Australian has been forced to withdraw due to a wrist problem that also kept him out of Wimbledon in July, having finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic a year earlier.
A knee injury prevented him from playing in a home slam in Australia earlier this year, while a foot problem stopped him from competing at the French Open in May.
The 28-year–old will miss out on a fourth straight Grand Slam.
Without having played since June at the Stuttgart Open – his only match in 2023 – Kyrgios’ ranking has slipped to No. 92 in the world.
Kyrgios’ wrist injury has also kept him out of tournaments in Washington, Atlanta and Toronto, and he was unable to recover in time for the US Open in New York.
Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff became another US Open casualty when his withdrawal was confirmed.
Subsequently, Argentinian duo Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzman have moved into the main draw.
The US Open begins on Monday, August 28.
