Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja to fly the Nigerian flag at the upcoming G77+China Leaders’ Summit in Havana, Cuba.
He’s stepping in for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the high-profile meeting, which will run from 15th to 17th September 2023.
Olusola Abiola, the Vice President’s Director of Information, revealed the travel plans in an announcement yesterday.
Shettima will be joining a host of other global leaders, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, to engage in critical discussions.
The aim is to tackle developmental hurdles that are predominantly affecting nations in the global south.
In keeping with the Tinubu administration’s economic diplomacy strategy, Vice President Shettima will also capitalise on the chance to hold bilateral talks with other attending dignitaries. These side discussions are expected to bolster Nigeria’s trade and investment ties.
The summit is themed around addressing current developmental challenges, emphasising the role of science, technology, and innovation in fuelling socio-economic progress.
This aligns well with the interests of the member states, who are looking for proactive solutions to common hurdles.
Accompanying the Vice President are Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology; and Amb. Adamu Lamuwa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among others.
It’s worth noting that President Tinubu recently participated in last week’s G20 summit in India, marking a busy diplomatic calendar for Nigeria’s leadership.
