When Bernie Ecclestone, 92, Formula 1’s former supremo, dropped the bombshell earlier this year he and late FIA president Max Mosley knew about Renault’s conspiracy to win the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, it sent shockwaves not just through motorsport, but sport in general.
F1, keeping itself to an extremely high standard, set about protecting its own so as not to destroy its credibility. But, as with any dirty little secret, what’s done in the dark will come to light.
Adding further insult to injury is the fixed race – and the inaugural race in Singapore, mind you – impacted that year’s championship, with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa losing the title race to Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren by just one point.
