Rising Mexican star Peso Pluma has canceled a series of concerts in Mexico after receiving death threats. Here’s the latest.
Peso Pluma was initially planning to perform in Tijuana on October 14 at the Estadio Caliente in Baja, California. But following death threats emblazoned on banners across the city, the rapper has canceled the event. The rapper’s labels—Double P Records and Prajin Music Group—posted news of the cancellation to Instagram.
“Our goal is to protect the fans and the team. For the safety of everyone involved, we will cancel our show in Tijuana,” the statement reads. “Thank you so much to all our fans for understanding. We love you. Sincerely, La Doble P.”
The rise of Peso Pluma’s popularity in the United States has been unmatched. He became the first Mexican artist to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards this year. He also became the first Mexican act to perform on the “Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” in April 2023. The extra attention from his TV performances has left members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel angry with the rapper.
That’s because the Mexican rapper speaks of violence and narco-related themes in his songs, often name-dropping powerful cartel drug leaders amongst his lyrics. His music video last year “Siempre Pendientes” featured him waving a machine gun and singing praise for Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán.
After banners with the death threats were found in Tijuana, the local mayor said authorities would conduct an investigation. At least one person was detained in connection with the banners, which all contained the same message.
Peso Pluma has also postponed US dates in Milwaukee, Chicago, Indianapolis and Birmingham, though no explanation was given at the time. Some of the dates for concerts in Mexico were also changed, including moving a date in Guadalajara from November 4 to October 27.
