A woman has claimed she woke up while having her gall bladder removed at a Welsh hospital, even though she should have been under general anaesthetic throughout. Natasha Japhet, 33, said when she woke up during the operation she could “feel everything” but also felt “paralysed”.
Ms Japhet had gone to have the routine operation at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor on Tuesday, September 19, and recalled the harrowing account in an interview with NorthWalesLive. She said: “I was screaming in my head but I was paralysed because I couldn’t move.
“But I couldn’t tell them. I think I passed out with the pain that I had because I could feel everything that they were doing. I passed out when they inserted two rods into my stomach.” For the latest health news, sign up to our newsletter here.

Ms Japhet claims that she remembers waking up a second time during the operation and hearing that surgeons had realised she was awake. : “There were voices around me and then I heard ‘Oh my God – she’s awake. Do something,” she claimed.
“I think they must have done something then to put me back to sleep properly this time. And when I did come round in recovery the anaesthetist started questioning me straight away.”
Following the operation, she claims a surgeon asked her what she remembered while under the anaesthesia. She said she recalls saying: “I remember lying there and not being able to breathe, not being able to move and screaming in my head that I was awake and for you to stop.”
The chef and mother-of-four, from Llanaelhaearn near Pwllheli, is now back at home recovering from her ordeal. Her gall bladder was removed as planned and she is being supported by her partner
She said she was asked to give a statement to medical staff about her experience. According to NorthWalesLive, officials at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board plan to meet Ms Japhet next week.
While her gall bladder was removed successfully and she is recuperating at home, mum of four Ms Japhet said she has been left “traumatised”, adding: “I haven’t been able to sleep. Every time I fall asleep I feel like I can’t breathe again.” Adele Gittoes, interim executive director at Betsi Cadwaladr, said: “We would urge Ms Japheth to contact us directly to discuss her concerns.”
