Ditto Music predicts that Spotify will have 500 songs reach the billion stream milestone before Apple Music welcomes its first. Is that accurate?
Global music distribution and label services company Ditto Music has predicted that Spotify will have 500 songs reach the billion streams milestone by the end of the year and before Apple Music achieves its first track to reach the billion stream mark.
According to Ditto’s research, Spotify is well on its way to hitting 500 songs with a billion streams each within the next few months, likely before the end of 2023. The Billions Club playlist currently sits at 473 tracks, and previous years suggest an average annual increase of 118%, putting Spotify on the course to have its 500th song join the playlist by early November 2023.
“With Spotify set to hit this remarkable streaming milestone, it once again highlights how success on the platform can transform the lives of musicians selling their music online. At Ditto, our goal has always been to support artists in easily getting their music onto the biggest online music stores – and helping them keep hold of everything they earn while doing so,” said Lee Parsons, Ditto Music CEO.
At the same time, Apple Music has yet to see any song reach the billion-stream milestone. Still, data from the company suggests that they’re on track to hit the mark around November 2023 – around the time predicted that Spotify will reach 500 songs with a billion streams each. Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” is currently the most-streamed song on Apple Music, with roughly 930 million streams.
Ditto estimates that artists reaching the billion count on Spotify could earn up to $4.37 million from streaming revenue, depending on location and numerous other factors. Based on the amount made per stream through Apple Music, an artist reaching a billion stream counts on the platform (again, based on location and other variable factors) could earn up to $10 million from streaming revenue.
