Like any Marvel production, Insomniac Games’ “Marvel’s Spider-Man” game back in 2018 ended with ‘stingers’ teasing where this franchise could go next.
That first game ended with Miles showing Peter his new spider powers, and Norman Osborn watching his ill son Harry who is in a giant glass tank. The “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” spin-off game followed that up with exploration of Miles and Peter’s friendship and a scene with Harry waking up and ordering Dr. Curt Connors to get him out of the tank.
Next month’s “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” game will see both Harry and Curt Connors/The Lizard as key supporting characters – continuing the storyline from the two previous outings. It begs the question, will the sequel do the same and setup a third entry?
The game’s director Ben Arfmann recently spoke with io9 and was asked about where the franchise would go next. He couldn’t say, deflecting the question with:
“I mean, I would love to be able to talk about that. We love this game. Are so excited about this game. I’m really hoping that fans love it in the same way that we do. And we’re going to be so lucky to get to tell more stories. [But], for right now, I think what we can talk about is the game that comes out October 20.”
More forthcoming was advanced senior writer Lauren Mee and director of community and marketing James Stevenson who tease that much like the first game, this ends in a way that hints at what’s to come:
Mee: “Well, the dream is that you finish the game and go ‘Holy s—. I need more of this.’”
Stevenson: “Maybe there’s a post-credits scene.”
Arfmann: “Yeah it’s definitely a Marvel experience.”
As for when a theoretical third one might arrive, assuming it gets greenlit, the earliest would be 2026 though more likely 2027 or 2028 – suggestiing it would be either one of the final PS5 titles or one of the first PS6 titles as console generational refreshes for PlayStation and Xbox are expected around 2027/28.
“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” will be available for the PS5 on Wednesday, October 20th.
