OPS da nuevo impulso a iniciativa para eliminar más de 30 enfermedades transmisibles tras el impacto negativo de la pandemia

Washington, DC, 26 de septiembre de 2023 (OPS)- La Iniciativa de Eliminación de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), que busca poner fin a más de 30 enfermedades transmisibles y afecciones relacionadas en América Latina y el Caribe, recibió hoy un nuevo impulso en una sesión paralela al 60º Consejo Directivo de la institución de salud pública regional.

“A medida que avanzamos en la recuperación de la pandemia, ha llegado el momento de dar a la Iniciativa de Eliminación un impulso renovado, más fuerte y maduro para completar el objetivo en materia de enfermedades transmisibles que se inició justo en el momento de la creación de la Organización, hace 120 años”, afirmó el doctor Jarbas Barbosa, Director de la OPS.

Tras un esfuerzo mundial, la viruela fue erradicada en 1980, y 14 años después, la poliomielitis fue eliminada de las Américas. Desde entonces, también se han eliminado la rubéola, el síndrome de rubéola congénita, el sarampión y el tétanos neonatal, y se han logrado avances frente a otras enfermedades. En 2023, 19 países de la región estaban libres de malaria, ocho habían eliminado la transmisión maternoinfantil del VIH y la sífilis, y sólo queda un foco de oncocercosis en la cuenca del Amazonas.

El cáncer de cuello de uterino, la enfermedad de Chagas, el cólera, las hepatitis B y C, el VIH/sida, la rabia humana transmitida por perros, la lepra, la malaria, la oncocercosis, el tracoma y la tuberculosis son algunas de las enfermedades a terminar para 2030 como parte de la Iniciativa de Eliminación y del compromiso asumido por los países de la región en 2019 en la OPS.

Para el doctor Barbosa, las enseñanzas extraídas de la pandemia de COVID-19, así como de anteriores experiencias de eliminación, brindan a los países la oportunidad de potenciar la iniciativa y acelerar el paso. Otras oportunidades incluyen el arsenal de vacunas, diagnósticos, medicamentos y otras tecnologías disponibles a través de la OPS, así como el impulso de la salud digital y la comprensión más profunda de las desigualdades en salud y la participación de la comunidad.

La Iniciativa de Eliminación apunta a interrumpir la transmisión endémica de enfermedades, acabar con la morbimortalidad, y prevenir la discapacidad.

Para alcanzarlo, propone estrategias como integrar los programas y fortalecer el primer nivel de atención, reforzar los sistemas de vigilancia e información sanitaria, abordar los determinantes medioambientales y sociales con enfoque en las inequidades y en las poblaciones en situación de vulnerabilidad, y fortalecer el liderazgo de los ministerios de Salud.

Durante la sesión, el Ministro de Salud de Antigua y Barbuda, Molwyn Joseph expuso sobre los esfuerzos de su país para avanzar hacia la eliminación del cáncer cervicouterino. La Directora del Programa Nacional de Tuberculosis de Brasil, Fernanda Dockhorn, presentó los esfuerzos renovados que están llevando adelante para terminar con las enfermedades infecciosas, con foco en los determinantes sociales; y la Ministra de Salud de Uruguay, Karina Rando, compartió la experiencia de registros digitales y herramientas de geolocalización para llegar a los no vacunados.

Por su parte, Philippe Duneton, Director Ejecutivo de UNITAID, expuso sobre innovaciones en salud que pueden contribuir a la eliminación de enfermedades como el VIH, la TB y la malaria. Magdalena Robert, Directora adjunta de Promoción de Programas y Comunicaciones, Polio y Distribución de Vacunas, de la Fundación Bill y Melinda Gates, destacó el apoyo de su organización a la región para asegurar que las niñas de países de bajos ingresos también tengan acceso a la vacuna para prevenir el cáncer cervicouterino.

Durante la clausura de la sesión, el Director de la OPS entregó al Ministro de Salud y Bienestar de Belice, Kevin Bernard, el certificado de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) que reconoce que el país centroamericano está libre de malaria, el último de la región en conseguir ese objetivo. Belice notificó el último caso autóctono de malaria en 2018 y, en mayo de 2023, fue certificado como país libre de malaria.

“Esta es la culminación de una larga y dura batalla que abarca siete décadas”, sostuvo el ministro Bernard. “Nada de esto habría sido posible sin el apoyo constante de las organizaciones de base comunitaria y la dedicación de nuestros trabajadores de salud, la piedra angular de nuestro éxito”, agregó.
