Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has taken the blame for Kalvin Phillips’ poor form.
The Spaniard said he has failed to get the best out of the England international midfielder at Man City.
Phillips left Leeds United for Manchester City in 2022 for £45million.
He has only succeeded to start four games for the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League champions.
Phillips could start for the Citizens in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night as they play Newcastle.
“Marcelo [Bielsa] gave Kalvin the best of Kalvin in his career,” Guardiola told his pre-match press conference.
“I’d love to have done with Kalvin what Marcelo has done to him.
“We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [Leeds playing style] was perfect [for him].
“The club spoke with him because he did not have many minutes. He said ‘no, I want to stay’.
“We brought Kalvin here for his quality. He is open minded, always wants to learn and wants to help. This is what we want to try to do.”
