Season 5 of Love Is Blind has been arguably even more dramatic than usual for the social experiment turned reality dating franchise. First there was the love triangle that formed between Uche, his new flame Aaliyah, and her bestie Lydia, who also happened to be Uche’s ex. Then there was the friction that arose between Stacy and Izzy once she made it abundantly clear what she expected from him, financially speaking, were they to get married.
But one of the hardest-to-watch moments came from JP and Taylor, a couple who were initially shaping up to be the sweethearts of the season. After forming an instant bond in the pods, JP proposed to Stacy in Episode 2, making them the first official couple of Season 5. But the course of true love never did run smooth, and there were certainly a few bumps in the road for the couple once they left the pods and actually met face-to-face.
JP, who had been open about his affections and intentions with Taylor, began to clam up after the big reveal moment. He continued to struggle to communicate clearly with Taylor, prompting her to confront him during a couples’ trip to Mexico.
It was then, during a pretty uncomfortable conversation, that JP said he had a problem with how Taylor had presented herself during their first meeting, saying she was too made-up for the moment. “I understand you tried to present yourself, and look as best you could, but I feel like if you would’ve presented yourself like this, without any makeup, it would have been bette,” he said, adding: “It felt like you were fake.”

Taylor, understandably, expressed her disbelief that her appearance could provoke such a change in JP. He then made some callous remarks about her “caked” makeup and false eyelashes—despite a glam appearance being practically a prerequisite for being cast in a modern dating show—and said that if they ended up getting married, he’d prefer she wear less or no makeup. Taylor ultimately decided to leave the experiment.
“I think when he initially said it, I was like, What in the world? There is no way that you are acting completely differently because of the way I look,” Taylor has since said in an interview with E! News. “We’re on here for an emotional connection, and we had built such a strong connection between us… To me I don’t feel like there’s a lot of truth behind that, but I was definitely hurt about it.”
She added that his specific remarks about her appearance were not the reason she ended things, but rather because of the overall difference in his behavior in and out of the pods. “I left JP because I fell in love with this version of him,” she said, “and then that version was no longer there.”
