George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel film “Furiosa” is reportedly eyeing a potential splashy premiere at next year’s Cannes Film Festival in May.
Cannes was a majorly successful launching pad for “Mad Max: Fury Road” back in 2015 when it debuted out of competition to a raucous world premiere. The film was released in cinemas very shortly after – leading to it grossing $374 million worldwide and winning six Oscars from ten nominations.
World of Reel was first to report the potential Cannes premiere news, but Variety adds that according to the studio, any such suggestion was “purely a rumor”.
A Cannes launch would depend upon actor scheduling – talks that can’t happen until the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved. The festival’s chief Thierry Fremaux meanwhile tells the trade he would welcome it with open arms:
“It would be wonderful to welcome them again with ‘Furiosa,’ especially since George Miller was a marvellous jury president in 2016. I know he’s working on the film and I hope it will be at Cannes.”
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as a younger version of Imperator Furiosa whom Charlize Theron played in ‘Fury Road’, whilst Chris Hemsworth will serve as the villain of the film.
Miller and Doug Mitchell will produce. Miller returned to Cannes in 2022 with his romance drama “Three Thousand Years of Longing”.
